Hans "Fritz" Mayers
Hans "Fritz" Mayers started his musical journey back in 1974 learning how to play from listening to the great masters of the banjo, Earl Scruggs and Ralph Stanley. Then he found some new generation players such as Alan Munde, Courtney Johnson and John McCuen [among others] and he was off and running. His playing style reflects these influences with a hard driving right hand and a willingness to venture off the beaten path.
In 2003, Fritz, Rex Hall and Willi Sager formed The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz, with a foundation in traditional Bluegrass music but a willingness to go beyond the boundaries. The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz play a wide variety of music ranging from straight ahead driving bluegrass, contemporary bluegrass, old country classics, swing, blues and a little bit of Motown, Gershwin and The Village People thrown in.
Here’s what some are saying about The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz:
“This Louisiana trio contains hot players, singers and big-time comic relief. Their stage announcements, antics, repertoire and name (bagasse - the fibrous residue remaining after the extraction of juice from crushed stalks of sugar cane, a waste product sometimes used for paper) allowed them to play an astounding show that had the audience amazed at their prowess and laughing at the same time.”
-Ricky Flake of the Sun Herald newspaper, Gulfport, MS.
Fritz is plays the Recording King Professional RK-R82 with The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz. He was looking for a banjo to take out on the road with him and had the opportunity to play one of the Recording King prototypes in the Desert Rose booth at IBMA in 2005. In his own words, “I was thoroughly impressed with the playability and the tone that this banjo brought to the table……and it’s a NEW banjo…..that is what is so remarkable. This is an unbelievable banjo for the price. These Recording King banjos are one of the big boys." The playability, tone and craftsmanship are, in his words, “topnotch."
The Fabulous Bagasse Boyz are touring regularly and you can learn more at their website, www.myspace.com/thefabulousbagasseboyz. Check ‘em out and stop by their booth, shake hands and say howdy. Fritz will even let you play his RK-82 and then you too can experience what he did the first time he played a Recording King.
